During this quarter-century, the Germanic Saxon raids on Roman Britain continued.  In Parthia, Ataxerxes of Persia, overthrew the Parthians and established the Persian Sassanid dynasty.  He claimed all of Asia Minor for Persia and invaded Roman Mesopotamia.  Roman emperor Severus attempted to invade Persia and was only partially successful.  Both sides suffered badly but both claimed victory.  The Roman frontier was maintained however.  Soon after this conflict, internal and external pressures on the Roman Empire resulted in a prolonged civil war for the title of emperor.  One of the major conflicts during this civil war revolved around emperor Maximinius.  During his reign, the Roman Senate declared two other men as co-emperors of Rome and in Africa, General Gordianus I was elected emperor by his troops.  After battles in northern Africa and Italy, Maximinus, the co-emperors, and Gordianus I and II were dead.  Gordianus III was made emperor by the Praetorian Guards.  After being made emperor, Gordianus had to deal with Shapur I of Persia who invaded Roman Syria.  He and his general Timesithesus drove Shapur out but both were soon dead.  The new emperor, Philip, made peace with Shapur and re-established the Roman-Parthian border.  At the end of the quarter-century, a Gothic horde crossed south over the Danube River and moved into the area of modern Bulgaria.

Notable Battles
243 Resaena between Timesithesus and Shapur I.
