Emperor Valentinian of Rome defeated the Quadi in Gual and they became peaceful.  However, Valentinian died during peace negotiations.  In the east, the Visigoths continued to plunder Roman lands.  Eastern Roman Emperor Valens went to lead his troops personally but he and two-thirds of his soldiers were killed by a confederation of Goths and the east was left defenseless.  Three emperors had ruled Rome at the time, one of which was Valens.  Gratian, ruler of the west, appointed Theodosius emperor of the east to replace Valens.  Maximus, a commander in Britain, took Gratian's position by force.  The other two emperors accepted this but when Maximus attempted to take Italy, he was defeated and killed by Theodosius. Meanwhile, Theodosius had continued Valens' war against the Goths.  From the east, the Huns continued to attack the Ostrogoths and Visigoths and raid Roman lands.  Theodosius  forced the Ostrogoths west and allowed the Visigoths to settle in Thrace in exchange for mercenaries.  In 390, the Visigoths joined the Huns in devastating Thrace.  The Roman general Stilicho, a former Vandal, suppressed the Visigoths.  In 394, the Frankish general Arbogast rebelled aginst Rome and took control of the western Roman empire.  Theodosius and Stilicho went to deal with this problem and defeated Arbogast.  However, Theodosius died shortly afterwards and the Visigoths resumed fighting with the Romans.  Rome was dealing with a number of pressures so, by 397, the Visigoths, under Alaric, were given Illyricum and Epirus.  In Britain, the Scotsmen of Ireland under Niall, began to savagely harass the western lands of Britain.  There were also raids on Britain by the Saxons, Picts and others.  In India, Samudragupta continued his expansion of the Magadha kingdom.  His son, Chandragupta II, became ruler in 380 and continued the expansion of the kingdom over all of northern India.

Notable Battles
378 Adrianople (Edirne) between Valens and the Goths.
388 Aquileia between Theodosius and Maximus.
