1. Battle of Aliwal

Date: January 28, 1846

War: First Anglo-Sikh War

Cause: The battle was triggered by the Sikh army, led by Ranjodh Singh Majithia, crossing the Sutlej River into British-held territory to cut off British supply lines. The British forces, under Sir Harry Smith, moved to intercept them.

2. The January 28 Incident (First Battle of Shanghai)

Date: January 28, 1932

War: Undeclared Sino-Japanese War (Interwar Period)

Cause: Tensions boiled over after a staged incident where Japanese monks were beaten in Shanghai. Using this as a pretext, Japanese marines launched an attack on the Zhabei district of Shanghai to expand their control and suppress Chinese anti-Japanese boycotts.

3. Action of 28 January 1945

Date: January 28, 1945

War: World War II

Cause: A Royal Navy squadron comprising the cruisers HMS Diadem and HMS Mauritius intercepted a German destroyer flotilla attempting to move from Norway to the Baltic Sea to support the defense of the German homeland. Result: A strategic British success. One German destroyer was heavily damaged and the flotilla was forced to return to port, delaying their redeployment and exposing them to further air attacks, although no ships were sunk during the engagement itself.

5. Battle of Mata Asnillos (Sack of Panama)

Cause: The famous privateer Henry Morgan led a massive expedition of buccaneers across the Isthmus of Panama. His goal was to capture Panama City (Panama Viejo), which was the richest city in the Spanish New World and the transit point for Peruvian silver. The Spanish governor, Don Juan Pérez de Guzmán, deployed his forces on the plains of Mata Asnillos outside the city to stop the pirates.

Result: Privateer/English Victory. Morgan’s forces used superior tactics to shatter the Spanish cavalry and infantry. The Spanish attempt to use a herd of oxen to stampede the pirates failed. Following the battle, Panama City was looted and burned to the ground (either by the Spanish to deny it to Morgan, or by the pirates), leading to the abandonment of the site and the founding of the modern Panama City (Casco Viejo) nearby.

1. Battle of Turnhout

Date: January 24, 1597

War: Eighty Years’ War (also part of the Anglo-Spanish War)

Cause: Dutch forces led by Maurice of Nassau (Prince of Orange) sought to surprise and intercept a Spanish army column commanded by the Count of Varax, which was moving through the Turnhout area in the Spanish Netherlands.

Result: Decisive Dutch and English victory. The Spanish cavalry was driven off, and their infantry was routed with heavy casualties. The battle confirmed the effectiveness of Maurice’s military reforms and modern cavalry tactics.

3. Battle of the Dogger Bank

Date: January 24, 1915

Cause: British naval intelligence intercepted and decoded German radio signals revealing a plan by the German High Seas Fleet to raid the British fishing fleet and coast. The British Grand Fleet sortied to intercept the German squadron in the North Sea.

Result: British tactical victory. The German armored cruiser SMS Blücher was sunk, and the German flagship Seydlitz was heavily damaged. The British flagship HMS Lion was also damaged, but the German fleet was forced to retreat.

1. Battle of Corunna (Battle of Elviña)

Date: January 16, 1809

War: The Peninsular War (Part of the Napoleonic Wars)

Cause: The British army, led by Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore, had been retreating across northern Spain in harsh winter conditions, pursued closely by French forces under Marshal Soult. The British needed to hold off the French long enough to evacuate their exhausted troops by sea from the port of Corunna (A Coruña).

Result: Tactical British Victory / Strategic French Success. The British successfully repelled the French attacks, allowing their army to embark and escape to England. However, the British commander, Sir John Moore, was mortally wounded by a cannonball during the battle. The French took control of the region after the British departure.

3. The Arrival (The Takeover of Tikal)

Date: January 16, 378

War: Teotihuacan-Maya Conflict (Internal Mesoamerican Power Shift)

Cause: This “battle” was a calculated military intervention (or coup). Forces from the central Mexican metropolis of Teotihuacan, led by a warlord named Sihyaj Kʼahkʼ (“Fire is Born”), marched into the Maya city of Tikal to install a new dynasty and bring the city into Teotihuacan’s sphere of influence.

Result: Teotihuacan Victory. The reigning king of Tikal, Chak Tok Ich’aak I, died on the exact same day Sihyaj Kʼahkʼ arrived (likely executed). A new dynasty was established, launching Tikal into a golden age of dominance under Mexican-influenced leadership.
